Why you should amend a speeding ticket

Speeding tickets are considered a moving violation or points violation in Kansas and Missouri. These can typically be kept off of your driving record if you hire us to negotiate a plea bargain with the court to have your speeding ticket reduced to a non-moving violation, such as “Illegal Parking,” “Defective Equipment,” or another similar charge. If your ticket is reduced to a non-moving violation, the ticket will not be reported to the Department of Revenue, and no points or moving violations will be added to your driving record.

Discuss your case.  Our speeding ticket and traffic law lawyers will then discuss with you or will contact you back regarding: (1) the amount of our attorney fees; (2) our estimate of the price for amending or obtaining a diversion regarding your speeding or traffic ticket(s).  The fine amounts, court costs, and attorney fees vary based on the individual jurisdiction, the severity of the charge, your driving record, and various other factors.

Payment. Once we agree on representation, we have a variety of payment options.  You can pay via credit card (either over the phone or using our credit card payment link at the bottom of the page) or cash (in person only).  For most speeding tickets, we request that you make an up front payment of our attorney fee and the estimated costs of the fine amount and court costs, and we will then make pay to the court on your behalf once your ticket has been amended without you ever needing to appear in court (in most cases).

We Represent You.  My office will then confirm our engagement regarding your case, and will provide you with a receipt for your payment to our office.  We will then work with the Prosecutor, Court, or Clerk to arrange a plea, diversion, reduction in charges, or other agreement so that your charges are amended or reduced to a nonmoving violation (in most cases).  When this process has been completed, we will notify you of your case’s disposition and will include a receipt from the Court.

The majority of prosecutors throughout the Kansas City area are willing to negotiate a plea agreement, diversion agreement, or other type of amendment for many types of speeding tickets and other traffic violations.  This helps you avoid the common issues involved with speeding and traffic tickets, including:

  • Points or Moving Violations
  • Increased Insurance Premiums
  • Job or Employment Implications
  • Driver’s License Suspension or Revocation
  • Possible Jail Time

Missouri.  In most Missouri courts, we can work with the prosecutor to reach an agreement to amend your charge from speeding to a nonmoving violation such as a “defective equipment,” “illegal parking,” or another type charge that does not result in points against your driving record or have the other serious negative consequences associated with a speeding conviction.  As part of a typical plea agreement, there is typically an increase to the original fine amount listed on the ticket (some have fee schedules, while others use the general rule of thumb of “doubling” the fine listed on the ticket).  The amount of the increased fine depends on the specific jurisdiction, the speed you were going, your driving record, and other factors.

Kansas.  In Kansas, the typical process is slightly different.  While some cities and municipalities allow a plea/modification process similar to that in Missouri, other jurisdictions allow for a diversion agreement.  Under a diversion agreement, an initial application is made, and if approved, the driver must agree to abide by certain restrictions for a prescribed period of time in order to have the speeding ticket amended to a nonmoving violation.  This diversion process is becoming more and more prevalent and has similar costs to “amending” a ticket.

Most speeding tickets issued by the Missouri State Highway Patrol go through the Fine Collection Center (“FCC”) located Jefferson City, MO.  Some local police and county sheriff’s departments also process their tickets through the FCC.

Attorney Fees at kcticketlaw

Because of the quantity of traffic law violations and speeding tickets that we assist clients with throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area, we are able to offer a $95 flat attorney fee for many types of traffic tickets and speeding tickets.  For many other speeding tickets, our rates are approximately $150-300 depending on the jurisdiction, your charges, and other factors.

Your ticket is eligible for this $95 attorney fee if:

  • Your court date is at least 5 business days away
  • Your speeding ticket is for less than 15 mph over the speed limit, or the ticket is for a stop sign violation, illegal u-turn, signal, lane violation, no insurance, or other similar charge 
  • Your ticket is located is in one of our eligible cities/municipalities
  • You utilize our Estimate Form to contact us and correspond with us solely using email
  • You utilize our online credit card payment system and pay the attorney fee ($95) plus any fines and court costs at the beginning of the case.
Please note that the $95 flat fee is not included for certain cities such as Independence, Leawood, Overland Park, or for most Fine Collection Center tickets (incluing Platte County, Clay County, Jackson County) or many other courts in the area.  Because more time is typically involved in amending tickets that do not meet the above criteria, we typically charge a nominal amount more (typically ranging from a $150-300 attorney fee depending on the circumstances/specific case).

Please note that the amounts above are for our attorney fee only, and that this  does not include the amount of the fine, court cots, or other fees that you will pay to the Court.  We will let you know these other costs prior to our representation and collect them from you up front as well if possible.
